2015

For N.V. Nederlandse Gasunie we designed and created a series of outside benches.

An old 67 km long Stewarts & Lloyds Gaspipe made in 1930-1940 was used in the 2nd world war to get fuel to the Alied forces in the Northwest of Europe. in 1963 pieces were used to build the gasunie infrastructure in the south of Holland. After 65 years it has reached it’s end of it’s technical life and has been replaced from 2011-2015, one of the biggest underground infraprojects of it’s time.

As a gift to the 14 villages the pipe ran through Gasunie decided to leave a piece of pipe behind as a gift, buroJET was asked to think about how this could be done.

We made a durable design for an outdoor bench, for every bench we re-used 3 meters of the old S&L pipe; we put the 30 cm wide pipe form it's original horizontal position to a vertical one, as it is no longer in use.

We put a subtle Gasunie logo on the pipe and after galvanising a very simple sturdy floating Iroko seat was added.

As a total the bench forms an asymetrical cross to mark where the pipe used to run underground.

It now stands as a landmark for people to sit and enjoy the beautifull countryside of Holland.

This project was made by Blokmeubel Eindhoven.

The first Bench is placed at Gasunie Headquarters in Groningen,  a second one will be placed at Enexis in Breda, the rest of the 13 benches are placed as we speak in Boxtel, Haaren, Gemert-Bakel, Gilze-Rijen, Rucphen, Halderberge, Etten Leur, Breda, Tilburg, Deurne, Oosterhout en Roosendaal, The Netherlands
